“The International Longshoremen’s Association, Local #1416 was chartered on April 7, 1936. Since its inception the union has provided Long Shore Labor for the Miami-Dade County Port of Miami. Local #1416 union hall is located in the heart of the Historical Overtown District in Miami, Florida and continues to employ laborers (also known as Longshoremen) throughout the Miami area. Long Shore Laborers load and unload trains and ships from all over the world; including Freighters and Cruise ships with abundant passenger counts. Miami is often referred to as the Cruise Capital of the World. The professionalism of this union has surpassed others by providing quality service and quick turnaround time which is equally important and essential in planning for the future and meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding industry in Miami-Dade County. The International Longshoremen’s Association, Local #1416 is known for its outstanding leadership throughout the years; having elected five local Presidents: Judge Henderson, Cleveland Turner, Clarence Pittman Jr., Ellis Canty Sr. and Torin T. Ragin. Local #1416 has affiliate groups known as Ladies Auxiliary No. 11 chartered on August 20, 1936 and the ILA Retirees Benevolent Association, Inc. formerly known as the ILA Retirees and Widowers Club. ILA Local #1416 take pride in supporting the youth of its workers by providing educational scholarships that will assist them with their future endeavors. The local is nurturing and empowering its youth group the ILA Achievers to becoming future leaders. This local union is dutifully demonstrating labor, strength, solidarity and concern for workers, worker’s rights and the community. ILA Local #1416 has obtained a standing reputation of being a pillar of service throughout the community working with several organizations for the betterment of youth, seniors, laborers and the working people. The union is a longtime supporter of the ILA Get Out to Vote Campaign (GOTV) soliciting voter registration. A prestigious honor bestowed on this union when the International Longshoremen’s Association, Local #1416 was inducted into the National American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Hall of Fame. The International Longshoremen’s Association, Local #1416 has pledged allegiance to always work toward the advancement of all those who desire to labor for their families and community.”
